help setting up my small salty tank
Been doing a bit of research to nite on setting up a marine tank it's fir my mum nothing to hard to keep a pair of clowns and a good clean up crue
I have got a juwel Rio 125 with inturnel filter
deltec 300 hang on protein skimmer
I need a wavemaker what size ?
I was reading earlier that u need 1.25 lbs of live sand and rock per gallon
So my tank is 125lt = 27 gallon so
1.25x27=33.75lbs= 15 kgs seem like a he'll of a lot of sand and rock
Help lol

1st piece of advice is pull out that internal filter and get an external, they give much better flow and turnover not to mention somewhere to put some l/r so the display doesn't look crowded... take it your going for a fowlr setup then?
you need 1/5 total volume in l/r so for a 125L tank it'll take 25kg.
for wavemaker ye need 20x turnover so for a 125x20= 2500l/h which will be between your filter and a suitable wavemaker.
don't have the sandbed too deep, maybe about 1" or so will do.

hi mate
general rule regarding liverock its 1 kg per 10l of water for a 125l you will need at least 13 kg

So 25kg of live rock and enough sand to cover the bottom an inch deep I thought an exturnel filthy would fight agents the live rock? But I would be happy to remove it for I don't like itdavey_c wrote:1st piece of advice is pull out that internal filter and get an external, they give much better flow and turnover not to mention somewhere to put some l/r so the display doesn't look crowded... take it your going for a fowlr setup then?

Re: help setting up my small salty tank
sorry mate 25 kg is abit overkill, if using a external filter remove all sponges and media, you dont want anything competing with the bacteria in the liverock, remember liverock is a biological filter

i'd like to see you say to the salties 25kg is overkill.... i was recommended to get 60kg for a 300L for adequate filtration. anyhow i'll take a step back because i'll only cost ye money

Re: help setting up my small salty tank
I looked into it a while back and was told to get Fiji grade A live rock, 1kg per 10ltrs I think? It was a 60ltr tank and was told 6-7kg.
There is a post somewhere in here about it. You also need a good strong wavemaker and lighting.
Don't think I needed a filter either?
Might be some use?

don't do that been thinking on going in to them for a wile but don't no that much about them so I need all the into I can get starting with a small tank first to see how it goes and if I'm enjoying it I'll move from the malawis to the saltys

fiji grade A rock is about the best you can get,but a little more expensive dobbies in lisburn sell it £12.50 per KG. no use for internal filters unles you are just using it to hide the heater and maybe add some rowaphos or carbon.
as for an external filter IMO they have no use in a marine tank, i always say if you can get a sump built for the cabinet do it. Sump tanks are highly recomended, the more volume of water the easier it is to keep parameters stable, if theres a sump you can also have most of the equipment in there and when doing waterchanges/RO topups you can do them from the sump so the display tank is not getting disturbed

Re: help setting up my small salty tank
yes mate maybe, but its a golden rule 1kg per 10l of water, have a check yourself. So that means he needs 12-13 kg thats why i said its overkill and theres no need for the 25kg. Its only 125 l tank with the substrate and 25kg of rock where are the fish going to swim???? have you ever seen 25 kg of rock? that would nearly fill 125l tank on its own

i myself was going to say 12-13kg of live rock and wat chris.m was saying about fiji grade a is the best as its the most pourist rock you can buy.i have a 90ltr tank running atm and have a 200ltr mutureing and would agree with davey on external but think you would be safe with that size tank to use an internal as this is wat i have used in my 90ltr atm but have external got for new tank !!!

Re: help setting up my small salty tank
Yes mate hang on overflow box's are spot on especially if you dont fancy drilling the tank then just buy a decent return pump. Nearly any tank that has a cabinet can be modified to fit a sump

ya had taught about an overflow but my cabinnet is far to small for sump and also i bought this 200ltr tank with most of the equipment with it like juwel skimmer etc so will use this and move onto sumthing biger afterwards

You can buy sumps or make one to fit inside the cabinet

Re: help setting up my small salty tank
Yes definitely sump > external > internal; for larger tanks of 3 foot and above definitely a sump needed.
I go with the rule 10-15% live rock of volume water; good quality live rock; more during initial stages and when parameters stable I usually remove some of the rock/sell them off.
There is bound to be different opinions out there depending also on what system you intend to go down the line- traditional berlin or zeovits(in this case live rock not as essential) or lately carbon dosing.

Re: help setting up my small salty tank
Ask ANYBODY when it comes to marines everyone is an expert and there way is the best way. I strongly advice buying a book or 2 or a lot of self research. I agree and disagree with some points here but sure so will everyone Personally with marines everything comes into play regarding everything, eg: Id be judging what dept i wanted substrate do to stocking and vice versa with live rock (Obviously with minimum filtration levels kept in mind) I would even need to think out coral and fish stock before deciding on a salinity level. They are just 2 variables out of millions. We have no experts in the forum or brought in, public forums are for multiple opinions, sharing and helping each other when we can. If there is anyone with some info they feel worked for them , please always feel free to post it up But if you want to really learn how to keep salty's Rab grab a book pal and dive in , trial and error is always the best. Obviously with us helping as much as possible Best of luck with it pal

Re: help setting up my small salty tank
Well species dictionary's are always good both coral and fish, no particular one as they all give the same brief pic and write up of the fish/coral in question, but they are fantastic for learning about compatibility's between your desired stock As for some general basic start to finish info id try my hand at some of these

Re: help setting up my small salty tank
It is interesting to see a wide range of recommended live-rock weight to water volume ratios.
Personally, I don't have any preferred recommendation.
When it comes to filtration, although some are "better" than others and some are more convenient to maintain than others, what is important is that the filter works irrespective of design.
If any one type of filtration did everything, was super efficient, was cheap, was easy to instal and maintain then we would probably all use that........but that day ain't here yet.

Re: help setting up my small salty tank
I dont have a preferred ratio too; just maybe the minimum of 10% (cue all the gasps and shocks! lol ) to something like 20%. Much depends on quality of the live rock ; also stocking too of course; but I dont think just using live rock is sufficient for filtration with a fish and coral heavy tank. The nitrates and phosphates level will simply hit the roof. Patience and starting off slowly helps a long long way..

Thinking on a fish only set up with fake corals and coral rock seeing I have aload of it from the Malawi tank there seems to be a lot of work with corals in a small set up.

Re: help setting up my small salty tank
Fake Corals.............the guys from Fish Tank Kings get all hot and bothered under the collar over them, especially "if we don't get this right, then we're dead meat" {##with all pointy fingers and all that##}. ;)
20 kg of dense marble-like rock has about as much use as piece of glass with external surface area.
The ratios are, I guess, a rough rule of thumb like "a spoonful of baked beans for each person" (which sized spoon and how heaped it is is not mentioned).

Re: help setting up my small salty tank
OK guys and girls i have a wee update on the 125 marine tank. was having big problems with nitrate rising and my test kit was reading 0 from what i have heard and read it was down to the hair algae was feeding off it and growing like mad but hopefully I'm on top of it now when i first set the tank up i called in to one of the lfs to get advice on what to put in my External its an ehime 2217 1000 l/h i got off gumtree it came with full media for fresh water i was told by the young lad in the lfs to take out any sponges and filters but leave the media in as it will help to filter the tank i asked about running rowaphos and was told i didn't need it (WHAT A LOAD OF BULL sh1t) it was the media that was holding on to the nitrates and making them rise but I now seem to be going forwards i empted all the media out of the External and filled it with live rock and i all so have carbon and rowaphos in there as well all test are showing 0 and the hair algae is starting to go thank fu%*K.
photos be for the big clean up
I have all so started to add some soft corals to the tank with really help set it off these are photos after the clean up.
the stock list fish
two common clowns
two fire fish
two hermit crabs
one cheery red shrimp
stock list soft corals
green mushrooms
Purple mushrooms
Button Polyp
pink Finger Coral
pink zoa
pulsing xenia.
i would like to add some more fish but i don't want to over kill the wee tank was thinking maybe two Three Striped Damsel or Banggai cardinalfish how do you no when enough is enough ???????

Re: help setting up my small salty tank
looking good rab, no sign of you getting the big tank, or is the Malawis coming back
Re: help setting up my small salty tank
Looking well there. Its horrible isnt it when you test 0 for nitrates and phosphates but yet algae running havoc consuming all the nutrients. I keep an eye on tank glass and live rock these days to see if my nitrates and phosphates levels are in check.
If the tank is 3 feet you can add another fish or two no bother!
