Re: Achilles Tang
Family: Acanthuridae
Scientific Name: Acanthurus Achilles
Identification: Generally belongs to the tang family; its dark colour with a sharp orange to red colour on the rear (for most) makes it stand out from other fishes.
Distribution: Hawaii
Average Size: Generally to about 7 inches, but some adults may attain 8 or 9 inches.
Habitat: They require a lot of swimming space so always aim for the largest tank you can afford. They also require a spot to sleep at night, ensure there is an ample amount of liverock to provide appropriate shelters.
Minimum Tank Size Suggested:100 gallons.
Characteristics and Compatibility: Common names include the Achilles Surgeonfish the Red-Tailed Surgeonfish. They are found only in Hawaiian waters where they live singly, in pairs or as part of a shoal. Peaceful with all other inhabitants as a general rule. However Achilles tang is one of the more aggressive surgeonfishes. Aggression towards other large fish such as butterflyfish can be common. Smaller species like clownfish, dottybacks and gobies are generally left alone
Diet and food: Herbivore but once acclimatised they will eat brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill and whatever else you offer.
Reef safe: Yes
Note: not a fish recommended for the beginner; usually difficult to get it to feed in the beginning and it will starve itself to death in captivity. They are not as hardy as other surgeonfish species in captivity.
