Nice one, what kind of gar is it Brian?
I was just looking at a foot long alligator gar earlier today, serious fish.
Cheers,
Patrick

The one I was looking at was in aquatic village. So hard to Id young gars, they all look like spotty toothy monsters when small...
Good luck with him, hope it is an aligator sure you're well set up to handle a beast like that.

Re: gar at last
Brian I han a spotted gar for about 6 weeks , it was growing and eating very well then it decided to jump out of the tank through a hole about 1.5 x 1.5 inches . When I discovered it it was nearly dead but I moved it back and forth in the tank for about 10 mins .It was just about swimming so I turned out the lights , next morning it was still struggling but unfortunately it died later that day .Moral of the story dont leave any hole uncovered

Re: gar at last
Brian it took mine about 4 weeks before it ate anything and then it was only live stuff . I tried prawns ,krill and whitebait without any luck . At one point I tried starving it for 3 weeks to see if it would eat anything else but it wouldnt , so had to go back onto the live stuff . Stick with it ,you will get there

Re: gar at last
alright, just asking because i picked up an alligator gar in AV to clear my shop credit and was gonna compare notes haha.
ian only barely got him to take feeder fish after a week of trying different foods also! i have him in with my Pbass to see how he gets on... did you consider having other fish in the same tank to try help encourage the feeding to start?
your sure the swordtail isn't too big a size for him??

Re: gar at last
yep thinkin of putting a baby giant gouramy in with it see if it helps to get the gar feeding.i will be droping of a 3 foot rtc and a pacu to av maybe this week, hoping to pick up an ali gar and maybe a pangassius.its a we swordtail should be ok.let me know Davey if you get the gar on dead stuff, from what i hear the ali gars are easier to get on dead and pellets ,but well see.
what size is the ali gar?good luck with it

Re: gar at last
yea ian was saying you were dropping down, he's like a kid in a sweet shop over it haha. he has 1 gar left to sell. the gar is about 5" and he seems a bit inquisitive about what the bass do be up to so heres hoping. he just doesn't go down to the bottom much so i'mhoping that changes.
here's some pic's sure.

Re: gar at last
having him in with the Pbass was being a bit hopeful. i was trying him on lance fish pieces but the bass were taking it on him. so today i suspended a piece by string in the flow of the filter (seemed to be where he stayed allot) stood back and watched. after a little while he went over and snapped it up... problem though, he didn't get it off the string so swallowed that too, had to net him and cut it where it left his snout because it was driving him bonkers!!
i'll have to find an easier way to string a piece that won't come off in the flow yet he can pull it off. i'm happy enough he fed though and hopefully now he'll stick to eating lance!

delighted for ye, i'd say there was some sigh of relief when he ate 1st haha.
yea mine is doing well, a greedy fecker also.... he likes to hold the cubes in his mouth for the Pbass to eat from, now isn't that very thoughtfull of him , till its at a size he can swallow.... and thats even after his fill of prawns

Re: gar at last
really enjoying growing this one out Minky, reckon it should be near a foot by the new year, from lookin into growth patterns from various peoples dealings growing out ali gars should hit 2 foot or over in the first year,3 foot the second year and then growth dramatically slows to an inch or 2 a year there after.
hows your gar doing Davey, suppose you,ve been concentrating on the tank build ?

Re: gar at last
ah still have to look after the extended family(fish) pal lol.
mine is about the 8" mark also (maybe slightly smaller) but he's doing good. him and the aro don't see eye to eye the whole time but only some jousting between the two.... when the gar has a full belly though he's not a great swimmer so thats when he tends to hide.... ment to ask, does yours rub the glass with his nose much?.. mine does it a bit.
ian was saying 2 gars didn't survive after leaving the shop so was wundering if they are a bit soft when moving from waters to waters... anyhow they are quite interesting to keep
